Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria, has expressed concern over the Federal Government’s deployment of soldiers in Kano, which he believes breaches the 1999 Constitution as amended. The situation revolves around the throne of the Emir of Kano, with the Kano State House of Assembly and Governor having followed due process in repealing the 2019 law that divided the emirate and reappointing Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir.
Atiku Abubakar’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, stated that the Federal Government’s support for the former Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, to return to the Nasarawa Palace with military backing is unconstitutional and undermines the integrity of the Nigerian military. He emphasized that Kano State has a long history of peace and harmony and warned that any attempt to destabilize the state would be resisted.
The statement further noted that when Muhammadu Sanusi II was dethroned in 2020, Kano remained peaceful, and the current situation could lead to a breakdown of law and order, for which the Federal Government would be held responsible.
Atiku Abubakar called for respect for the constitution and the rule of law, urging the Federal Government to avoid actions that could lead to anarchy in Kano State.
