Kano elders kick against Emir Sanusi dethronement, head to court

The elders of Kano state under the auspices of Advocates for a United Kano have condemned the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.

The elders vowed to challenge what it described as the brazen acts of illegality perpetrated by the government of the state. In a statement signed on Monday, March 9, the chairman of the elders’ group, Bashir Othman-Tofa described the dethronement as sad, unfortunate and illegal.

“The advocates call on all Kanawa and residents of Kano state and beyond to stay calm, and not to resort to any violent reaction whatsoever. Violence is no solution to anything, for no one can predict where it may lead to” the statement read in part. Emir Sanusi removal: Arewa Youth groups blame Buhari, northern elders for silence The group, however, vowed to challenge the case in court. “In particular we have vowed to sustain our judicial challenge to the unlawful law passed by the Kano House of Assembly under which the governor purportedly removed the Emir,” the group said.

Similarly, leader of Arewa Youth Organizations, Murtala Abubakar, has stated that the dethronement of Emir Muhammad Sanusi II by the Kano state government is President Muhammadu Buhari’s fault. The youth groups also blamed northern elders for not intervening in the feud between the former Emir and Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Meanwhile, a former senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has berated the Kano state government over the dethronement of Emir Sanusi II. On his official Twitter page, Sani said that the sack of Sanusi is a clear case of the intoxication of power on the part of the state government.

“the incompatibility of the crown and the conscience.” In a related development, the Kano state government has announced Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as the new emir for the ancient town. Four kingmakers of Kano elected a new emir, following the dethronement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II earlier on Monday, March 9. The kingmakers are Madakin Kano Yusuf Nabahani; Makaman Kano Sarki Ibrahim; Sarkin Dawakin Maituta Bello Abubakar and; Sarkin Bai Mukhtar Adnan.
