by

A Kano State Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the victory of Senator Rufa’i Hanga as the elected member of the Kano Central Senatorial District.

OBSERVERSTIMES reports that the tribunal, led by Justice I.P Chima, dismissed the petition filed by Abdulsalam Abdulkarim Zaura, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25, 2023 senatorial election in Kano Central.

Zaura had challenged the declaration of Hanga of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the winner of the election by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

He alleged that the Kano Central senatorial poll was marred by irregularities, malpractices, and non-compliance with the Electoral Act.

However, the tribunal found that Zaura’s petition was not supported by evidence and dismissed it.

The tribunal also ordered Zaura to pay N300,000 in costs to the second respondent, the NNPP, and N300,000 each to the first respondent, INEC, the third respondent, Hanga, and the fourth respondent, Ibrahim Shekarau.
