terrorist group, Islamic State, has claimed responsibility for the Wednesday bomb explosions that killed over 100 people near the memorial site of Iranian General Qassim Suleimani, who was murdered in a United States drone strike in 2020.
In a statement on the group’s official Telegram channel, they claimed the attack was carried out by two attackers, whom the group identified as Omar al-Mowahid and Sayefulla al-Mujahid near the tomb of Mr Suleimani, near the town of Kerman, Iran.
The group narrated that the attackers made their way to the second remembrance ceremony of Mr Suleimani, whom they referred to as a “hypocrite leader”, and donated the explosive belts strapped to their bodies.
Dozens of others were injured in the attack.
The Islamic State claiming responsibility for the attack aligned with initial American intelligence assessments and that of other regional military officials, which pinpointed the terrorist group as the perpetrator.
According to the New York Times, the latest development would end initial feelings of some Iranian leaders who had thought the attack was an Israeli one due to the country’s position in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
