The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed strong disapproval over the rising incidents of extortion involving police officers across Nigeria. A recent case involved officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, who allegedly extorted N10 million from local youths.
The officers implicated in the incident—ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine—are currently detained and facing an orderly room trial. Thanks to the efforts of the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16, the extorted funds have been recovered, according to a statement released on Friday by Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi.
Under IGP Egbetokun’s leadership, the Nigeria Police Force upholds a zero-tolerance stance toward corruption and misconduct. The Force is committed to investigating each allegation of extortion and abuse of power with utmost seriousness. The IGP has assured the public that thorough investigations will be conducted into all allegations against officers who breach conduct.
IGP Egbetokun has mandated severe penalties for officers found guilty of misconduct, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Force. “In pursuit of restorative justice, the Inspector General of Police has mandated severe consequences for any officer, no matter how highly ranked, found culpable, acting as a deterrent to those who may seek to compromise the integrity of the Force,” Adejobi stated.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any misconduct through the provided police helplines and contacts. The Force remains committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring that justice is served and public trust is restored.
