The Nigerian President and Commander in Chief of the nation’s Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of all security agencies in handling security issues in the country.
The President expressed his uttermost dismay at a meeting with Service Chiefs and heads of other security agencies at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Thursday.
Addressing State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting, National Security Adviser, NSA Major General Babagana Monguno (Rtd) said the Commander in Chief told them that their best was not good enough.
He said: “We just concluded a meeting between the President and the Minister of Defence, the Service Chiefs and the Heads of other security agencies including those of intelligence.
“Today’s meeting basically focused on recent developments. The President expressed great concern over the declining security situation in the country. He is extremely unhappy about what is happening and feels that even though the security agencies are doing their best, their best is not good enough for him and he wants an immediate reversal of the current trend and an immediate reversal of our misfortunes in all dimensions.
“The President also told us clearly, in no uncertain terms that he and indeed the administration came to power with three main areas of focus, fighting insecurity, fighting corruption and revamping the economy. He also noted that it takes common sense for anyone to understand that without security, the pursuit of the other two cannot be achieved; it will just be an exercise in futility.”
The NSA disclosed that the Nigerian leader warned that he will not accept any further decline in the performance of security agencies.
“Therefore, he wants the security agencies to take into consideration the wider implication of the gradual descent of the security of this country, that he is not going to accept any further escalation of the security situation.
“He also stated that no one was forced on him, he selected everyone based on their records. Therefore, it is up to each individual organisation to live up to expectation. He has also said that it is extremely important that we in the security agencies must ensure that we justify the leadership by not disappointing the populace”.
According to him, the President said ”the proliferation of drugs, small arms and light weapons must be stopped with immediate effect.”
He also said President Buhari directed all security agencies to work in harmony to maintain a strong synergy among them for better performance, leading to more successes in the fight against all forms of insecurity.
