The Imo State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, sitting in Abuja, has delivered a unanimous judgment affirming the election of Hope Uzodimma as the Imo State Governor. The three-man panel, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan-Osadebay, held that Uzodimma’s election substantially complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
The tribunal dismissed the petition filed by the Labour Party and its governorship candidate, Athan Achonu, for lack of merit. Achonu had alleged electoral malpractices in some parts of the state and sought to nullify Uzodimma’s election.
In the 2022 governorship election, Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won with 540,308 votes, followed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with 71,503 votes, and Achonu of the Labour Party with 64,081 votes.
The tribunal’s decision upholds the declaration of Uzodimma as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
