Former President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed a personal anecdote about discipline and accountability, revealing that he once sent his first daughter home from his farm for arriving late to work. This remark came during a meeting with Dr. Dayo Israel, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, who was on a familiarization visit.
According to a statement from the hospital’s Head of Public Relations, Dr. Segun Orisajo, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of strong leadership, noting that effective leaders often need to make difficult decisions, even if it means stepping on toes.
Obasanjo recounted, “Shortly after I left office as the military Head of State, my first daughter, who was studying Veterinary Medicine at the University of Ibadan, joined my farm during her long vacation to gain practical experience. On her first day, she arrived at a quarter past seven instead of the usual 7 a.m. I warned her that she needed to set a good example for other workers and that I would not hesitate to take action if it happened again.”
To his surprise, she was late again the following day. “I did not hesitate to send her back right from the gate. This had a profound effect on all my employees, who realized that if I could do this to my daughter, who were they to be late?” he added.
During his address, Obasanjo encouraged Dr. Israel to be “just, fair, and humane,” even when difficult decisions are necessary. He also praised the leadership of Prof. Adewale Musa-Olomu, the Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta, for the significant achievements made during his tenure.
In response, Dr. Israel expressed his admiration for Obasanjo, calling him a leader full of wisdom. “Meeting Baba Obasanjo is always a pleasure. His insights will be invaluable as we work to transform FMC Abeokuta into a world-class health institution,” he stated.
Israel reiterated his commitment to supporting the hospital’s management in its mission, emphasizing the need to transition from the national grid to renewable energy and fostering partnerships for sustainability.
As part of his familiarization tour, Dr. Israel also visited the palaces of the Alake, Osile, and Olowu, where he received royal blessings, and met with the former Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Dr. Ade Abolurin.
