The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated the sale of 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice at a subsidized price of N40,000 for a 50-kilogram bag. This program, launched by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, aims to address food security challenges in the country and make rice more affordable for citizens.
Key Details of the Rice Sale Initiative:
1. Eligibility and Verification:
• Buyers must present their National Identification Number (NIN) or phone number to verify their identity.
• The system is designed to prevent any individual from purchasing more than one 50kg bag of rice to ensure fairness and avoid exploitation.
2. Government Oversight:
• A multi-disciplinary government machinery has been established to ensure the process’s transparency and effectiveness.
• Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with government agencies involved in the sales process.
3. Expected Impact:
• The introduction of this quantity of rice is expected to lower the overall price of rice and other staple foods in Nigeria.
4. Purchase Process:
• Civil servants can purchase rice using their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) number.
• Buyers must log their details with sales operators and make payments electronically using an ATM.
• After payment, a receipt with a unique code number will be issued, which is necessary for collection.
5. Collection Process:
• The collection point is separate from the sales point to manage the distribution effectively and avoid overcrowding.
• Buyers must present their code at the collection point to receive their rice.
6. Sales Points in Abuja:
• Approximately five to six sales points will be established across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the duration of the sales initiative.
This initiative is seen as a timely intervention to support citizens amid current economic challenges, particularly concerning food prices and availability.
