In celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, Hon. (Princess) Benedicta Attoh, Executive Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council, has called for the empowerment of female children to dismantle societal barriers and stereotypes that undermine their importance.
Addressing the global context, Attoh emphasized, “In a world where globalization often overlooks nations like Nigeria, it’s crucial to recognize that gender doesn’t determine one’s value—it’s about contributions to society.”
In a statement released by Benjamin Atu CPS to Executive Chairman, Etsako East, She urged African leaders and the Nigerian government to prioritize girl child education as a tool to address gender disparities. As the first elected female Council Chairman in Edo North, Attoh condemned the persistence of early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and the caregiving burdens faced by girls, which hinder their educational opportunities.
Attoh encouraged girls to embrace their uniqueness and compete with their male peers despite global challenges, advocating for self-liberation from cultural and traditional constraints to realize their potential.
She attributed societal poverty to the lack of education for girls, asserting that increased female education correlates with poverty reduction and benefits such as improved health, delayed marriage, reduced female genital cutting, enhanced self-confidence, and greater visibility in public and private sectors.
“Educating a girl child empowers her to reach her full potential, fostering independent thought and judgment. Without education, girls lack the skills needed to advance in society, perpetuating discrimination,” Attoh remarked. “As a female leader in Etsako East, I am committed to supporting and inspiring our girls.
