Muhajid Asari Dokubo, a prominent advocate for resource control and good governance in the Niger Delta region, has urged former chairmen of the 23 Local Government Areas in Rivers State to accept the end of their three-year tenure in good faith and avoid causing crisis. Speaking at an event to mark the 2024 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Port Harcourt, Dokubo emphasized that tenure elongation is unconstitutional and warned the former chairmen against attempting to extend their tenure beyond the expiration date of June 17,
Dokubo, also the Edi Abali of Kalabari land, advised the former chairmen to seek re-election if they wish, but cautioned them against inviting the wrath of the “people’s power” by attempting to stay in office beyond their tenure. He emphasized that the people of Rivers State are bigger than any individual and will not be taken for a ride by self-seeking individuals.
Young people in Rivers State were also urged to understand their roles in protecting the state against those who think it is their private estate. Dokubo referenced a popular radio jingle, “Love Rivers State or leave her alone. Don’t pull her down. Think what you can do for her, engage yourself in meaningful activities…” to drive home the point that the state is bigger than any individual.
He further stated that the people of Rivers State are exercising their “people’s power” by taking over local government secretariats until the government is ready to conduct new elections. Dokubo’s message emphasized the importance of respecting the constitution and the will of the people.
