In a surprising move, President Bola Tinubu has recommended Abdullahi Ganduje, the current national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for an ambassadorial position despite Ganduje’s ongoing corruption trial. This recommendation has sparked controversy, particularly given Ganduje’s history of alleged bribery, which dates back to 2018 when videos surfaced that purportedly showed him accepting bribes.
Ganduje, who assumed the role of APC chairman in August 2023, is facing corruption charges exceeding N50 billion, alongside his family members. The timing of Tinubu’s recommendation has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the appropriateness of nominating someone embroiled in legal troubles for a diplomatic role.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio was initially tasked with delivering the news to Ganduje, who reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the offer, feeling that it did not adequately reward his loyalty to the president. Ganduje claimed that the corruption charges against him are baseless and expressed confidence in his ability to win his case in court.
Tinubu later communicated directly with Ganduje, offering him the choice of ambassadorial postings in Africa, Asia, or Europe, with a particular preference for Chad, where Ganduje previously served. However, concerns persist regarding Ganduje’s suitability for such a position given his legal challenges and public perception.
Despite the ambassadorial offer, Ganduje appears to be lobbying to maintain his current leadership role within the APC, seeking support from influential political figures. He has also received confirmation for an upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for September 2024, indicating that he remains active in party affairs.
Ganduje’s spokesman stated that he had not been informed about the ambassadorial offer but confirmed the scheduling of the NEC meeting. The unfolding situation highlights the complexities of Nigerian politics, particularly in the context of corruption and party loyalty.
