Former FCCPC Boss Tunde Irukera Delivers Keynote on Visionary Leadership at ACGC Forum in Accra

by

Tunde Irukera, the former Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), delivered a compelling keynote address titled “The Resilient Leader: Leading Beyond Borders – Visionary Leadership in a Connected World” at the African Continental Governance Conference (ACGC) in Accra.

In his address, Irukera emphasized that the conversation around leadership is as much about Africa as it is about Africans, highlighting the critical role of counsels as risk managers in navigating today’s interconnected landscape. He articulated that resilience is inherently linked to resourcefulness, a vital trait for the continent’s future.

With Africa’s population currently at 1.3 billion and projected to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, Irukera noted the continent’s robust demographic advantage, with 70% of its population under the age of 30. This youthful and dynamic talent pool is characterized by boldness, courage, and the ability to thrive amid challenges. He pointed out that Africa is rich in natural resources, including vast deposits of gold and diamonds, and that its youth are well-equipped to embrace technological advancements and innovation.

Irukera stressed the urgency for leadership to effectively manage and regulate this talent pool, ensuring that young Africans can fully express their passions and potential. He stated, “If a vision doesn’t translate to a mission, then it is at best a television. It serves little purpose beyond viewing pleasure.” He underscored that the true measure of a vision is its translation into actionable missions that are culturally and environmentally relevant.

He also addressed the question of Africa’s potential, affirming that the continent’s possibilities are not improbable. Resilience, he argued, is a defining characteristic of African history and identity. From its rich cultural heritage to its agricultural and mineral resources, Africa is positioned as a vital player on the global stage, with its talents attracting attention in various fields, including professions, sports, and entertainment.

In conclusion, Irukera urged that with resilience and visionary leadership at every level, Africa and its people can lead not just within the continent but also beyond its borders. The interconnectedness of the world presents a unique opportunity for Africa to emerge as a leader in the global arena.
