The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, disclosed over the weekend that the Federal Government is gearing up to resume the crucial task of dredging Rivers Niger and Benue. This announcement comes as part of the government’s commitment to improving water resources and sanitation across the nation.
Prof. Utsev further detailed that his ministry has initiated the formation of committees to meticulously plan and execute the dredging operations for these vital waterways. While speaking to journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, during the sidelines of a graduation ceremony from a youth empowerment program organized by the Lower Niger River Basin Authority, he emphasized the significance of this endeavor.
“Dredging of Rivers Niger and Benue is what we are working on,” said Minister Utsev. “We have put some committees in place.”
These committees, he explained, will be responsible for assessing the feasibility of the dredging project. Upon completion of this assessment, the findings will be presented to President Bola Tinubu for further deliberation. This transparent approach aims to keep all Nigerians informed about the progress and importance of the dredging of these two critical rivers.
Minister Utsev stressed that his ministry’s ultimate goal is to ensure the provision of potable water, sanitation, and irrigation for all Nigerians. Highlighting the significance of water resources, he said, “Water for irrigation will be used to provide food for the enhancement of food security and ultimately generate income and empowerment. As you can see, some youths are being empowered today. Water is not only important; it is very necessary for the existence of living organisms. Without water, there will be no life.”
He also mentioned that President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda places a strong emphasis on food security, economic revitalization, healthcare, and security for all Nigerians. The Ministry of Water Resources is diligently working to contribute to these goals by ensuring access to clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and irrigation infrastructure.
