Shehu Sani, a social activist and former lawmaker, and Dele Momodu, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, have condemned former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose’s remarks on marriage practices in Northern Nigeria.
Fayose had suggested that the practice of marrying multiple wives and having many children contributes to Nigeria’s population crisis. However, Sani described the comments as “contemptuous and unconscionable,” arguing that they displayed a lack of sensitivity and respect towards Northern Nigerians.
Sani called for Fayose to withdraw his statement and tender an apology, emphasizing the need for public figures to exercise caution and respect when discussing sensitive regional issues.
Momodu also weighed in, questioning who is more destructive to the nation – the poor man with multiple wives and children or the politician with a lavish lifestyle. He urged Fayose to accept that politicians have failed the country and need to work together to address the nation’s problems.
The controversy highlights the importance of responsible and respectful public discourse, especially when discussing sensitive regional issues.
