The political landscape in Northern Nigeria has witnessed notable advancements for women, reflecting a significant shift in a traditionally supportive roles in their homes. Hajiya Amina Mohammed, a prominent global figure serving as the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations currently leads this pack. Her role says a lot about the increasing visibility and influence of women from Northern Nigeria in international governance and sustainable development advocacy. She’s an inspiration for aspiring female leaders, both within the region and internationally. The amazing achievements of this gem demonstrate that women from Northern Nigeria can achieve significant positions of power and influence on the global stage.

Aishatu Binani broke significant barriers by contesting the 2023 gubernatorial in Adamawa State. Her participation challenged the political status quo and signals a growing acceptance and support for female leadership at the highest levels of State government. This candidacy represent a crucial step towards normalizing women’s presence in top political roles within the region. Binani’s campaign not only highlighted her leadership qualities but also inspired many young women to pursue careers in politics, showing that gender should not be a barrier to political ambition.

In the National Assembly, trailblazers like, Senator Binta Garba and Honorable Aishatu Dukku have made substantial contributions, particularly in areas like education, healthcare, and women’s rights. Their legislative efforts gave light to the critical role of women in shaping national policy and advancing key social issues. Garba, for instance, has been instrumental in pushing for policies that support women’s education and healthcare, knowing that these are foundational broader societal development. Dukku, has focused on women’s rights in all of its forms.

A standout example of female leadership in Northern Nigeria is Mrs. Folashade Arike Ayoade, Ph.D., who is serving her third term as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Kogi State. The SSG plays a crucial role in the leadership structure of the state government, acting as a bridge between the executive and legislative branches, coordinating policy implementation, and ensuring efficient administration. Mrs. Ayoade’s tenure has been marked by exceptional performance, effectively coordinating government activities, driving key initiatives, and fostering transparency and accountability. Her ability to manage complex administrative functions and mediate between different branches of government is a blessing to behold.

Mrs. Ayoade’s success not only highlights her capabilities but also paves the way for average northern women, proving that with dedication and competence, they can excel in high-level government positions. Her story is particularly inspiring because it demonstrates that women can thrive in roles that are traditionally dominated by men, and her accomplishments have opened doors for other women to follow in her footsteps. Her influence extends beyond her official duties, as she actively mentors young women and encourages them to pursue careers in public service and leadership.

It’s no surprise that Kogi effortlessly exceeded the 35% international threshold for women’s representation in government.

The work of these amazing women has paved the way for more of their folks to enter politics and take on leadership roles, to create a more balanced and representative government. The presence of women in these high-stakes political environments challenges orthodox African gender norms and provides role models for young girls and women, to envision themselves in similar positions of influence.

The Arewa Women’s Advocacy Group have been instrumental in promoting political awareness and mobilizing women for greater participation. This group empower northern women by providing the necessary tools and platforms to engage effectively in political processes. Through training, advocacy, and support networks, these organizations help women overcome social and cultural barriers to political participation. They focus on educating women about their political rights and the importance of their participation in governance, to create a more informed and active female electorate.

International aid and non-profit organizations, and local civil society groups have been working together to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in Northern Nigeria. These collaborations have resulted in various programs and initiatives aimed at increasing women’s political participation, providing leadership training, and supporting female candidates. The combined efforts of local and international organizations are gradually changing societal attitudes towards women in politics.

Collectively, these efforts illustrate a gradual yet impactful shift towards greater gender inclusivity in Northern Nigeria’s political sphere. The progress achieved so far serves as an inspiration and a foundation for continued advancement. As more women take on leadership roles, they bring diverse perspectives and solutions to the table, to enrich the political discourse and contribute to a more inclusive policy-making process.

This journey is still ongoing, but the milestones achieved so far are significant even though the conditions are still far from the desired. Each breakthrough, whether it is an international or national appointment, a gubernatorial candidacy, a high-profile State appointment or the diligent work of grassroots activists, contributes to a broader movement towards a more inclusive and equitable political system. The stories of these pioneering women serve as powerful reminders of what can be achieved.
