Economic Reality Bites : Big Cars No Longer a Status Symbol as Abuja Big Men Opt for Smaller Vehicles

by

ABUJA, NIGERIA – In response to the soaring fuel prices, car owners in the nation’s capital are increasingly trading in their large vehicles for smaller, more fuel-efficient ones, a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) investigation has revealed.

The surge in demand for compact cars has led to a significant shift in the market, with vehicle dealers reporting increased sales of models such as the Kia Picanto, Suzuki Swift, and Toyota Matrix.

According to car owners, the primary motivation for this change is the desire to reduce fuel costs. “My Kia Picanto saves me a lot on fuel, and it’s easier to maneuver,” said Lawrence Ogunleye, a civil servant.

Samson Ugwuoke, another civil servant, echoed this sentiment, stating, “My Toyota Matrix consumes N25,000 fuel weekly, and I pick passengers to cover costs.”

Mary Jatau, a teacher, also praised her Nissan Micra, saying, “I spend only N20,000 on fuel per week. My husband’s Lexus 330 Jeep has become a burden due to the high fuel costs.”

Auto engineer Sylvester Edosa attributed the popularity of compact cars to their smaller engines, lighter weight, and improved fuel efficiency. “They are ideal for Nigeria’s rough roads and offer comfort and affordability,” Edosa noted.

As fuel prices continue to rise, industry experts predict the demand for compact vehicles will remain high, as motorists seek ways to mitigate the financial burden.

By the Numbers:

• Over 110,000 compact cars sold in Abuja since fuel subsidy removal
• Average fuel consumption: N20,000 – N30,000 per week
• Popular compact car models: Kia Picanto, Suzuki Swift, Toyota Matrix, Nissan Micra
