Displaced persons in Borno State express frustration and contemplate return to Boko Haram-controlled areas due to harsh living conditions in camps.
According to reports, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and even family members of repentant Boko Haram fighters voice similar threats, citing neglect by authorities and lack of daily essentials like food.
Some argue that life was comparatively better under Boko Haram occupation, claiming present camp conditions are unbearable due to shortages and lack of available farmlands.
According to them, the supply of basic necessities has been cut off and there are no farmlands available to cultivate.
Some of our colleagues here in Dikwa have decided to return to the bush because life is not any better here in the camp. We’re just suffering here,” a displaced person lamented.
“We took the decision to leave our families behind and relocate to the Boko Haram-controlled area because it is all about dying whether here or there,” another person added.
Families of repentant fighters echo these sentiments, considering a return to insurgent-controlled territories due to hardships in camps.
Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum dismissed complaints, stating, “Those who want to return to Boko Haram in the bush are free to do so.”
