Former Governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, calling on the administration to prioritize the needs of the people over luxury spending. In a televised appearance, Duke emphasized that government policies should center around the welfare of citizens, rather than burdening them.
Duke identified key drivers of inflation, including high energy costs, over-inflated contracts, ill-distribution of wealth, and high interest rates. He stressed that most Nigerians are more concerned about their daily needs than governance intricacies, making it the government’s responsibility to ensure citizens’ basic needs are met.
Duke also emphasized the importance of economic productivity, noting that Nigeria’s high unemployment and dependency ratios indicate a largely unproductive economy. He criticized the country’s over-reliance on imports, suggesting that leaders should leverage the large population to foster a productive, manufacturing, and agrarian economy.
The former Governor’s critique highlights the need for the government to focus on policies that directly benefit the people, rather than indulging in luxury expenditures while the population struggles with basic needs.
