The lawmaker representing Kogi Central senatorial district, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been named to represent Kogi in the 45-member constitution review committee to be chaired by Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin.

The committee is mandated to handle all bills seeking one alteration or the other in the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

According to the Senate president, Godwill Akpabio, the 45-member committee comprises eight principal officers of the senate who will serve as steering committee within the larger committee, a senator from each of the 36 states of the federation, and the Federal Capital, FCT, and one senator representing each geo-political zone of the country.

Speaking on the reason for the review, the Senate President said it has become important to review the Constitution to be in line with the current reality.

“There is a need for us to touch some aspects of the constitution to bring them in line with current realities, particularly with the era of artificial intelligence and some of the things we have observed that need to be put right.

“We are taking one senator per state because we are talking about the constitution amendment. One senator per state and then we are also taking one senator representing each geo-political zone,” Akpabio said.
