The Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to defending democracy and resisting manipulation by any interest groups seeking to undermine democratic governance. Lagbaja’s remarks come amid ongoing challenges facing Nigeria, including security threats such as terrorism, banditry, and social unrest driven by economic discontent. He acknowledged that these issues have evolved since the army’s last senior hierarchy meeting in April, highlighting the importance of addressing not just physical security but also food and social security, which can lead to broader security challenges.
To combat these issues, the army is reviewing its agricultural initiatives, including farms and ranches, to enhance food production. Lagbaja also mentioned plans for partnerships with various government ministries and private organizations to tackle the country’s food crisis.
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, who opened the conference, expressed his support for the Nigerian Army and its initiatives, indicating a collaborative approach to addressing the country’s security and socio-economic challenges.
