The CBCN has expressed deep concern over the severe economic hardship faced by Nigerians, citing high electricity tariffs, petroleum prices, transportation costs, and inadequate infrastructure as major contributors. In a statement, the conference highlighted the growing burden on individuals and businesses, emphasizing the need for urgent action.
The bishops noted that food insecurity and malnutrition have worsened due to rising food costs, attributing the crisis to persistent insecurity disrupting agricultural activities. They also addressed the impact of multiple taxation on businesses, calling for a more streamlined and fair approach to taxation.
The CBCN appealed to the government to harmonize taxes, address multiple taxation, and implement policies to address food insecurity. They urged support for farmers, small and medium-sized enterprises, and encouraged individuals to engage in farming.
Rev. Ugorji emphasized the need for repentance, concerted efforts, and national re-orientation towards truth and integrity, acknowledging that corruption has contributed significantly to the current situation.
