Yoruba Nation advocate Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has submitted a confidential petition to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on behalf of Yoruba Nation leader Prof Adebanji Akintoye. The petition, which revolves around the “Yoruba Nation agitation,” was delivered on Saturday with the support of other dignitaries including Diaspora Youth Leader Prophet Ologunoluwa and Vice President of Ifeladun Apapo Fatai Ogunribido.
The movement is urging the UK government to intervene in their quest for a separate nation predominantly owned by the indigenous people of Yoruba. This comes after Yoruba historian Banji Akintoye accused the Nigerian government of attempting to persuade Igboho to abandon the secessionist movement, citing a failed attempt by former Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen Tukur Buratai to bribe Igboho with billions of naira to renounce his cause while in prison.
Igboho, who exhibited strength of character by refusing to sign the document presented by Buratai, has been released in the Benin Republic. Akintoye commended Igboho’s commitment to the Yoruba Nation struggle, highlighting his principled stance in the face of corruption and coercion.
