A group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives has proposed an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to introduce a six-year single tenure for the President and Governors, as well as a rotational presidency among the six geo-political zones of the country.
According to Ikenga Ugochinyere, the member representing Ideato South/Ideato North Federal Constituency, Imo State, who spoke on behalf of the group, the proposed amendment aims to:
– Reduce government spending and wastage
– Improve efficiency in governance
– Ensure national stability
By introducing a single term of six years for the President and Governors, the lawmakers believe that the country can achieve cost-cutting measures and promote national stability.
The proposal is expected to generate debate and discussion among lawmakers, political analysts, and Nigerians, as it seeks to address issues of power rotation, governance, and national stability.
