The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken action against Sahad Stores in Abuja for deceptive pricing practices.  OBSERVERSTIMES recall that commission had initially sealed the stores due to a lack of transparency in pricing, where customers were charged higher prices at checkout than what was displayed on shelves.

Following an investigation and confirmation of continued deceptive practices, the FCCPC temporarily sealed the premises on February 16, 2024. However, after Sahad Stores committed to implementing transparent pricing practices, the stores were reopened the same day.

The FCCPC statement, obtain by the OBSERVERS-TIMES emphasized the importance of transparent pricing information to empower consumers and make informed purchasing decisions, especially during challenging economic times. The commission reiterated its commitment to combating exploitative and misleading practices that undermine consumer rights.

The FCCPC highlighted its role in protecting consumer rights and prohibiting deceptive business practices, with potential penalties outlined under Section 115 of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018.

The commission had previously investigated Sahad Stores for misleading pricing practices, where lower prices were displayed on shelves but higher prices were charged at checkout. Following the investigation and failure of specific staff to appear for discussions on corrective measures, concerns were raised about potential violations under the FCCPA.

Overall, the FCCPC’s actions against Sahad Stores demonstrate its commitment to ensuring fair and transparent pricing practices, consumer protection, and a healthy market environment. The reopening of the stores after commitments to implement corrective measures underscores the importance of compliance with consumer protection regulations.
