A recent flood disaster in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has raised concerns about the security of prison facilities in the region. Governor Babagana Zulum has expressed worry that some Boko Haram leaders serving jail terms might have escaped from the correctional centre due to the flooding.
The flood, which claimed lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira, also damaged a part of the old prison, prompting the evacuation of inmates to a new maximum security prison. However, there are reports that some prison inmates may have escaped during the evacuation, including high-profile Boko Haram leaders.
When asked about the potential escape of Boko Haram leaders, Governor Zulum confirmed his concerns in an interview with the BBC. “I’m worried, yes, I’m seriously worried,” he said. However, he also highlighted the success of the state’s rehabilitation program, which has seen over 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families repent and reintegrate into society.
The flooding has added to the state’s existing security challenges, with Governor Zulum describing it as “another serious calamity” and “humanitarian crisis.” He emphasized the need for support to address the crisis, stating that the current efforts are “never enough.”
The Borno State Government has established camps to resettle flood victims and provide support. Governor Zulum explained that this approach is necessary to prevent further loss of life and ensure that aid reaches those in need.
