Boko Haram Degraded by 90 Percent: Northeast Theater Commander

by

In an exclusive interview with Truth Nigeria, Major General Waidi Shaibu, Commander of the Northeast Joint Task Force, revealed that Boko Haram has been decimated by 90% and has lost its combat capacity. The terrorist group has resorted to planting mines and carrying out attacks on highways, forcing drivers to join convoys behind mine-sweeping trucks.

General Shaibu expressed confidence that Boko Haram will be wiped out soon, as many members are surrendering daily. He also discussed the rescue of Chibok girls, stating that 18 have been rescued through military efforts. The military provides medical treatment and hands them over to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and Social Development in Borno State.

The Nigerian government has made significant strides in combating terrorism, according to a UN report. Nigeria has dropped from 2nd to 8th in the Global Terrorism Index since 2016. However, the International Crisis Group notes that Boko Haram has gained ground in intra-jihadist fighting, and ISWAP remains a threat, claiming responsibility for 403 attacks between March 2023 and March 2024.

The contrasting assessments highlight the complex and evolving nature of the conflict, with both successes and ongoing challenges in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.
