The Federal Government of Nigeria is taking decisive action in response to allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), particularly in connection with the case of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. During a press briefing marking his one-year anniversary in office, Minister of Interior Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo emphasized that all individuals involved in the scandal will face consequences, regardless of their position.
The investigation was prompted by reports that Bobrisky, who had been sentenced to prison earlier this year, did not serve his time in the correctional facility as mandated. In light of these allegations, the minister has ordered a thorough investigation and announced the suspension of several senior officers within the correctional service.
Among those suspended are Michael Anugwa and Sikiru Adekunle, both Deputy Controllers of Corrections at the Kiri-kiri custodial facilities in Lagos State. Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna from the Afikpo facility and Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu from the Kuje facility in Abuja were also suspended for their alleged involvement in facilitating improper conduct related to inmates.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo urged the public to remain patient as the investigation unfolds, assuring that it will not be limited to Bobrisky alone, but will encompass a broader range of issues within the correctional system. He emphasized the integrity of the investigation committee and reassured Nigerians that no one would be shielded from accountability.
The minister’s firm stance reflects the government’s commitment to addressing corruption within its institutions and ensuring that justice is served.
