Atiku Urges Trump to Support Free and Fair Elections in Nigeria and Beyond

Former Nigerian Vice-President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has emphasised the need for election integrity in Nigeria, pointing to the recent US presidential election as a model of democratic transparency.

Reflecting on the outcome, he noted, “The lesson for us in Nigeria is the integrity of the process that ensures a credible outcome.”

Abubakar, who followed the U.S. election “with bated breath as the nation decided its future,” expressed satisfaction with the result, hailing it as “a resounding victory for President Donald Trump, and the Republican Party.”

In a tweet via his X handle on Wednesday, he praised this success as an “enduring testament to the resilience and vitality of the democratic process.”

As Nigerians anticipate future credible elections, Abubakar expressed hope that the Trump administration would be unwavering in its support of democratic principles worldwide.

“It is the expectation of every Nigerian that the Trump administration will stand resolute in ensuring free and fair elections in Nigeria and other places in the world,” he stated.

Atiku went on to commend Trump’s political journey as a “parable of courage in the face of adversity,” calling it a reminder of democracy’s strength despite its challenges.

He also offered warm congratulations to Americans, saying their “unwavering faith in the power of democracy and the sanctity of the ballot has once again shown the world the true might of the people’s voice.”

The former Vice-President concluded by hoping that the triumph of democracy in the U.S. would inspire similar electoral integrity and transparency in Nigeria’s democratic process.

The statement reads in parts, “This triumph, without a doubt, will stand as an enduring testament to the resilience and vitality of the democratic process – a timeless reminder that democracy, with all its trials and tribulations, remains a force for good in the world.

“The narrative of President Trump’s political journey, marked by his struggles and triumphs, shall serve as an inspiring parable of courage in the face of adversity — a lesson in the art of rising after every fall, and ultimately, emerging victorious.”
