Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has called for constitutional reforms to safeguard the stability and dignity of traditional rulers in the country. He emphasized the need to recognize traditional institutions in the governance framework, define their roles and responsibilities, and prevent state governments from exerting undue influence over them.
Atiku warned that the current trend of state governments interfering with the ascension of traditional rulers could lead to instability and undermine peace and order in communities. He noted that traditional institutions have played a significant role in the economic life, peace, and security of their domains, and therefore, deserve protection and preservation.
The former Vice President acknowledged that the current constitution does not recognize traditional institutions, but argued that they are an integral part of the country’s governance structure. He appealed to state governors to accord the necessary respect to the offices of traditional institutions, representing the country’s heritage.
