On his one year anniversary in office at the Yakubu Gowon House. The giant strides and achievements of the DG NYSC is being acknowledged by all stakeholders, especially among the Corpers who see him not just as their boss but a father.
At the onset, this General displayed his readiness to plunge himself head-on to the task of solving associated challenges of the individual Corper and the NYSC as an Institution. In a rare and unusual way the DG willingly gave out his personal phone numbers to the Corpers and urged them to put calls across to him whenever there were challenges. This not only endeared him to them but eliminated the usual bottleneck associated with tackling the meriads of challenges which is often very common with the youths and even the Institution. The unique and innovative leadership style of General Ibrahim at the NYSC did bring about numerous achievements within this period of one year.
One very important area to mention is the DG’s determination to stamp out fake Corpers i.e. those who get enlisted into the NYSC Scheme via aquisition of dubious higher school certificates from sometimes even non existing higher Institution both within the country and abroad. This cankerworm use to be the bane of the NYSC Scheme for a very long while. This case has virtually been eliminated or is being brought to the lowest within just this one year. Closely linked to this is the formation of illegal Orientation Camps which before now sprang up in certain parts of the country. This matter has been dealt with and is now history.
While risk sounding immodest, the NYSC has been so revitilized like never before. The biggest positive surprise of the moment is the remarkable interventions via provisions of medical kits to both the Federal and State Governments by the NYSC towards fighting the present very serious scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The products (kits) are actual handwork of serving Corps members. This is big kudos to the amiable, firm and hardworking Director General who is offering the leadership. As General Shuaibu Ibrahim begin the second year of his stewardship at NYSC we will continue to pray for him to keep succeeding as he goes on with his innovative style of leadership as we also wish him good health.
