Akpabio Meets Igini Months After Supreme Court Ruling

Senate President Godswill Akpabio met with former INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Mike Igini at the 2024 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Lagos. This meeting comes months after the Supreme Court ruled in Akpabio’s favor.

Igini had previously canceled the results of the 2019 Senatorial election in Akwa Ibom North West, citing irregularities. The move was seen as favoring the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). However, the Supreme Court later recognized Akpabio as the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Senatorial District.

During the meeting, Igini expressed surprise at meeting Akpabio in person, saying, “This is the first time I am physically meeting with the President of the Senate, we have only been seeing each other on Television.” Akpabio also acknowledged never having met Igini before.

The meeting marks a significant moment, given their past conflicts over the Senatorial election. Akpabio ultimately emerged victorious in the election and was elected Senate President.
