Internal Memo Claims Tenure Completion
An internal memo obtained by SaharaReporters suggests that Abdul-Akaba’s tenure simply concluded on October 10, 2024. However, sources indicate that the EFCC probe forced his resignation. The memo, dated October 14, 2024, from the Head of General Administration, Mr. Ahmed S.A., stated, “His departure was merely a result of completing his tenure, not resignation.”
Leadership Transition at Ajaokuta Steel
Following Abdul-Akaba’s exit, the Ministry of Steel Development has appointed Kanwai Atungs Joseph, the most senior Engineer and General Manager of Engineering Works, to oversee the company’s operations until a new Sole Administrator is appointed. The memo instructed all department heads to inform staff and ensure full cooperation with Joseph.
Controversy Over Tenure and Reappointment Efforts
Despite the memo stating the completion of Abdul-Akaba’s tenure on October 10, reports reveal he remained in office until October 14. Sources claim the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, has resubmitted Abdul-Akaba’s name for reappointment, allegedly contravening existing laws. Concerns have been raised about the legality of extending his tenure beyond the typical five-year limit.
Petition Sparks Probe into Alleged Mismanagement
The Nigeria Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council (NENYLC) petitioned the EFCC and ICPC in September, citing corrupt practices under Abdul-Akaba’s leadership. The EFCC acknowledged the petition, titled “Petition to the EFCC: Corrupt Practices and Mismanagement at the Ajaokuta Steel Company,” received on September 4, 2024. This petition has prompted the current investigation into his administration’s alleged misconduct.
