Acute Water Scarcity Hits Abuja as Water Board disrupts supply

 

Residents of Federal Capital Territory has been groaning with acute water shortages in the last one week,over a major damage at the lower Usman Dam.

This developement has affected the cost of pure water and bottle water as well as water vendors owing to persistent water shortages .

It was revealed that a packet of pure water sold between N100 and N120 now goes for N200 and N250 in some parts of the metropolis in Kubuwa, Kuje and Gwagwalada area councils.

Water vendors now sold a truck of water that is usually between N200 and N25O now at N500 per truck.

The bottle water of all brands are not also left out of the current costs,as Nestle water that goes for 1100, is now sold for 1500,while Eva water that was usually 900 is now sold for 1200.

This also affected some branded and unbranded bottle water depending on the quality of production.

A visit to the water board in Kubuwa, Gwagwalada and Kuje as well as it’s environs, confirmed that there was a major fault in the last one week,as no staff of the water board volunteered to speak with media men.

Efforts to know when the major faults will be rectified,did not receive any assurance as the workers are afraid to speak to press men.

The situation is becoming unbearable as residents has resorted to well water,borehole and some adjoining stream water for both domestic activities and for other use.

This is at the background of lack of water in some major areas of the satellite towns due to inability of FCT water board to expand the reticulation of portable water for optimum use by residents of FCT.

It was confirmed that even in the AMAC that host the sit of government, provision of water to residents had being a nightmare for some few years now.

This had occassioned the call by residents of FCT for a complete re-organisation of the FCT water board management to serve the people better, than the current situations.

As at press time, there was no any reliable assurance from FCT water board on when supply of pipe borne water will be restored.

This developement if not checked,will constitute a major hazards to the FCT residents that may exposed them to all forms of diseases.
