The concepts of arriving at a consensus against canvasser in any election or selection as the case may be could be the highest maturity demonstrated by any association of like minds.
This could also void factionalism among members of a political association, who may for reasons of dissatisfaction with the conduct that produces a winner to rally round their agreed upon candidate.
As the All Progressive Congress (APC ) geared up towards holding it national convention soonest, with the Mallam Mai-Buni led national caretaker committee weighing various options to which the convention will be a hitch free event of historic account, the need for fair and just decision is a catalyst in the life of the ruling party APC.
First, that the APC was born from a conscious determination by three registered political platform, namely,ACN, ANPP and the CPC,joined by a fraction of some few in APGA,N-PDP and LP,a merger that swept the PDP 16 years grip of the presidency, must not be casualised.
The unison demonstrated by these merger which produces president Muhammadu Buhari ,as president, was a consensus arrangement, that was not regreted by the political players ,which was scored as matured and very historic,of those that stood in for primary with Muhammadu Buhari in 2014.
As the APC continue to strategies on the best option for it national convention that would produce it’s national executives, zoning which is a borrowed system in democratic practice were earlier profered in order to avoid marginalization of any geopolitical zone at the top of the party’s national level.
This concept did not go down well with others ,as in the permutations to zone the national chairmanship to the north central was almost gaining grounds.
Be it as it may, since the formation of the APC ,going by the distributions of positions a cording to the merger,AC was considered first in the headship of the party, with Akande as the national chairman ,that represented the AC,he served for a period of two years and handed over to Mr John Oyegun ,being a slot of the ANPP.
At this time Adams Oshiemole again from the AC bloc was elected to occupy the position of chairman of the party from 2017 to 2019, he was ousted out of the position through series of petition that started from his electoral ward in Edo state.
Untill now, the APC is piloted by a caretaker committee ,a situation that has been condemned by other political parties in the country,as a show of inability from the party even as a ruling party to produced a substantive National executive in accordance with the tenet of democracy.
The atmosphere within the APC is charged as expectations kept growing day by day, with hope to when the Mai Buni led caretaker committee will come up with a definite directive on the convention that is expected to elect it national EXCO.
On this backdrop, arguments and disagreements on certain decision about the convention has continued to prevail among governor’s that were elected on the platform of the ruling party,APC and some legislators taking a varying position.
While a section of some of the party chieftains, will prefer a consensus candidate at The convention, other are rooting for zoning of the national chairmanship position to the north central.
Drifting off a consensus arrangement at this material time for the party may not be the best, just as taking the Chairmanship slot away from the CPC slot.
The CPC might have had it share with Muhammadu Buhari,at the presidency, nevertheless, it is poorly represented I the running of the affairs of the party, interestingly, the CPC was the brain behind the idea of merger with a sitting governor,in the person of Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura,when he was governor of Nasarawa state.
Senator Al-Makura, from all angle of the APC has demonstrated a leadership role that has put the ruling APC on life line in Nigeria today. His tenacity and sacrifices towards the success of the ruling party leaves no one in doubt that the APC can withel any storm come 2023.
This he demonstrated in different quotas, where he was assigned by the party ,which became vivid at Ekiti, when he chaired the primary that produced Governor John Fayemi, senator Al-Makura replicated same in the north east ,during a reconciliatory meeting he chaired .
Former governor ,apart from championing the course of the survival of the party, his personal relationship with his colleagues, former governors and among his senators colleagues, will foster unity among the APC members,if he becomes the national chairman of the party.
The All Progressive Congress, action and inactions predating a convention that would be acceptable, must not also drift from consensus candidature,as much as consider that the CPC bloc ,which senator Dr Umaru Tanko Al-Makura fits in would better it chances ahead of elections in 2023.
