US Lawmaker Assures Trump: “I Am On It” Regarding Nigeria Military Action Recommendations

The United States lawmaker tasked with investigating the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria, Representative Riley Moore, has promised a prompt report to President Donald Trump, assuring him, “I am on it.”
Moore’s statement was a direct response to a recent speech by Trump, where the former President doubled down on his claim that Christians in Nigeria were facing mass slaughter and that US action was required.
Moore posted on social media: “Thank you, President Trump, for your incredible leadership in defending persecuted Christians, especially in Nigeria. Your bold and decisive action to protect our brothers and sisters in Christ will save thousands of lives. I am on it and will have more for you soon.” This was in reaction to Trump vowing action on what he termed a “genocide against Christians” in Nigeria.
Trump Reiterates Threat of Military Action
In his speech, Trump reiterated his decision to redesignate Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over the large-scale killings of Christians. He warned that Washington could potentially cut aid or even take military action if the violence persists.
“Christianity is facing an existential threat in Nigeria, thousands and thousands of Christians are being killed, radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby making Nigeria a country of particular concern, that is a legal definition,” Trump stated.
Calling for rapid action from US lawmakers, Trump specifically named Representative Moore: “Something has to be done, I am asking Congressman Riley Moore together with Chairman Tom Cole and the House Appropriations Committee to immediately look into this matter to report back to me, I mean like immediately.”
He concluded with a threat of intervention: “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria… We are able and willing to defend Christians, the killing of Christians, it is not going to happen.”
Nigeria Rejects “Genocide” Characterization
The Nigerian government has consistently rejected the CPC designation and the claim that the violence amounts to targeted genocide.
Last Friday, immediately following Trump’s announcement, President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s position. “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty,” he stated, noting that his administration is actively engaged with leaders across both Christian and Muslim faiths and is working to address security challenges that affect all communities.
“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians,” President Tinubu declared.
International Support for Nigeria’s Sovereignty
The US threats of intervention have drawn sharp reactions from other global powers.
On Tuesday, China expressed its unwavering support for the Nigerian government, stating it “firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning.
Similarly, the European Union (EU) restated its solidarity with Nigeria, declaring full respect for the country’s sovereignty. EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in peacebuilding, interfaith dialogue, and human rights protection, stressing that the EU’s stance is guided by its “long-standing partnership and shared values” with Nigeria.
