The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has confirmed fears of a plot to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, following the recent defections of governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, issued a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, describing the moves by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa as a betrayal of their constituents. “The recent defections validate our long-standing warning that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” Abdullahi said.
He added: “While it may seem like APC has strengthened its ranks, these governors have abandoned their people to join a party that has made life miserable for the majority. Nigerians live through the APC’s failures every single day.”
ADC highlighted what it described as mismanagement by the ruling party, pointing to insecurity, economic challenges, failing healthcare and social welfare systems, corruption, and a diminishing international standing. “Food prices continue to rise, jobs are scarce, and insecurity chokes every part of the country,” Abdullahi said.
The opposition party stressed that the 2027 elections would be a decisive contest between Nigerians and the APC-led government. “The people can see, and they are waiting. 2027 will be a clear battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu and his gang of governors in the APC,” Abdullahi stated.
ADC maintained that the opposition remains undeterred by what it calls “political apostasy,” vowing to offer Nigerians a credible alternative. “Our coalition is committed to saving the country, not joining the gravy train,” the statement added.
