Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes has opened up about his journey at the Spanish giants, speaking candidly about his challenges, mentors, and commitment to the club. In a revealing interview with AS, the Brazilian international reflected on his growth, struggles, and ambitions to continue winning trophies with Los Blancos.
Rodrygo, who joined Real Madrid as a teenager, recalled his early experiences with the club’s reserve team, Castilla, and how his senior debut remains one of his most cherished moments.
“I remember playing my first game in Valdebebas with Castilla and scoring a good goal,” he said. “And I was sent off for celebrating. I’ll never forget when Zidane called me to tell me I was going to play my first game at the Bernabéu. I didn’t imagine it would happen so soon.”
The 24-year-old forward, who has now become an important part of Real Madrid’s attack, expressed gratitude to his former coaches, Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane, for shaping his career. “Whenever I can, I thank Carletto, his son Davide, and the coaching staff,” Rodrygo noted. “Everyone helped me, and of course my family.”
Reflecting on a difficult spell last season, Rodrygo admitted that both physical and emotional challenges affected his performance.
“The truth is, I had a very difficult time on a personal level. I went a long time without speaking to anyone. I wasn’t well, either physically or mentally,” he revealed. “Ancelotti helped me get through all that. He told me: ‘Just stay here calmly, you’re not fit to play now.’”
Despite rumours linking him with a summer move to Manchester City and Liverpool, the Brazilian made it clear that his heart remains in Madrid. “What happened last summer? I always told the club I want to stay here and keep winning titles. I’ve already won two Champions Leagues, but I want more with this club,” he said. “As long as Real Madrid want me, I’ll stay at Real Madrid. The day they tell me, ‘Rodry, go find another club,’ then I’ll say OK. But they haven’t told me that.”
