Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirović has confirmed that Nigerian international Semi Ajayi is back in contention for selection ahead of Tuesday’s Championship clash with Preston North End.
The 30-year-old defender, who joined the Tigers on a free transfer in the summer, impressed on his debut against Coventry City before an injury kept him out for seven matches across all competitions.
Jakirović, speaking on Ajayi’s return to full fitness, stressed the importance of his qualities to Hull’s backline.
“For the last two weeks, he trained in full, very hard. So he’s one option to play these games,” the coach said. “What does he bring? Everything – speed, duels, a tall player in our box who cleared a lot of balls against Coventry. He’s very important.”
Hull City have struggled defensively during Ajayi’s absence, conceding 14 goals in six league games and a further three in their League Cup exit to Wrexham. His return is expected to provide stability for a side seeking to climb the Championship table.
The Super Eagles defender, who previously featured for Arsenal and West Bromwich Albion, is seen as a key figure in Jakirović’s plans this season, especially as the Tigers aim to balance defensive solidity with attacking efficiency.
