Britain, Australia and Canada on Sunday formally recognised a Palestinian state, marking a historic shift in Western foreign policy and sparking immediate condemnation from Israel.
Portugal also confirmed it would follow suit, joining over 140 UN member states that already recognise Palestinian statehood. The announcements come amid mounting international pressure over Israel’s prolonged offensive in Gaza, which has left tens of thousands dead and triggered a deep humanitarian crisis.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK’s recognition was aimed at reviving hope for peace and advancing a two-state solution. “Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine,” he wrote on X.
Britain and Canada are the first G7 nations to take this step, with France and other allies expected to address the issue at the UN General Assembly opening in New York on Monday.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy stressed that the move was not symbolic but a signal of Britain’s responsibility to support a two-state solution, given its historic role in the region.
Palestinian officials welcomed the recognition, saying it sent a clear message to Israel about the unsustainability of its occupation.
Starmer has tied recognition to broader efforts for a ceasefire, humanitarian aid access in Gaza, and assurances against the annexation of the West Bank. He has also urged Hamas to release all hostages from the 2023 attack.
