••Opposition Party Vows to “Rescue Nation” as NEC Ratifies Key Committees and Condemns Worsening Insecurity, Economic Hardship.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today announced its National Convention will hold from Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025. The decision was reached at the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where the PDP also launched a scathing critique of the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the PDP’s NEC expressed “serious concern over the sorry and melancholic state of affairs of our Nation,” accusing the Tinubu government of being “irredeemably exploitative, insensitive and anti-people.”
The opposition party particularly highlighted worsening insecurity, “wanton killings, banditry, kidnapping, marauding of communities and other acts of terrorism,” which they attribute to President Tinubu’s “apparent negligence and abdication of his Constitutional duty.”
Economically, the PDP lamented “worsening economic hardship and extreme poverty” resulting from what they termed “ill-advised and ill-implemented policies.” The communiqué cited increases in fuel prices and electricity tariffs, multiple taxes, and unexplained charges as contributing to a collapse of the productive sector, business closures, job losses, and a rise in criminality.
The NEC also condemned what it called “policy inconsistency, wholesale corruption, massive treasury-looting, budget padding and diversion of public funds” within the Tinubu administration, leading to infrastructural decline and a loss of investor confidence. The PDP reiterated its demand for the Tinubu administration to reverse its “anti-people policies” and take concrete steps to address the nation’s security and economic challenges.
Furthermore, the PDP vowed to resist what it perceives as a “sinister plot by the Tinubu-led APC to turn Nigeria into a one-Party totalitarian state” through “desperate attempts to stifle and annihilate opposition parties.”
In preparation for its August convention, the NEC ratified the composition of two key committees: the National Convention Committee, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, with Governor Ademola Adeleke as Vice Chairman and Governor Peter Mbah as Secretary; and the Zoning Committee for National Offices, headed by Governor Douye Diri, with Governor Dauda Lawal as Vice Chairman and Governor Caleb Mutfwang as Secretary.
The NEC also acknowledged a resolution from the South East Zonal Executive regarding the party’s National Secretary position, which will be further discussed at the next NEC meeting on June 30, 2025.
Ambassador Iliya Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, reassured Nigerians that the party “remains strong, resilient, united and determined now, more than ever before in leading the charge to rescue our Nation from the vicious grip of the APC.”
