Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has made a landmark decision by approving the implementation of a N75,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state starting from November 2024. This decision was revealed after a meeting with the joint negotiation council, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other affiliate unions.
The chairman of the joint negotiation council expressed gratitude to the governor for also approving the payment of three months’ outstanding salary arrears left over from the previous administration. This move has been welcomed by members of the council, who were present at the meeting to discuss the implementation of the national minimum wage.
Governor Alia and his cabinet members were also present at the closed-door meeting, which lasted approximately an hour. The announcement of the N75,000 minimum wage was made during a briefing with journalists following the meeting.
The chairman of the joint negotiation council reaffirmed the council’s support for the governor and commitment to ensuring effective service delivery in Benue State. This decision marks a significant step towards improving the welfare of civil servants in the state.
