In a recent development, it has been revealed that certain state governors are pressuring federal lawmakers to withdraw their support for President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills currently under consideration by the National Assembly. According to the deputy spokesman for the House of Representatives, Mr. Philip Agbese, these governors are threatening to block lawmakers from securing re-election tickets in 2027 if they continue to support the bills.
Agbese emphasized that the House of Representatives remains steadfast in its support for President Tinubu’s efforts to revitalize the country’s economy and taxation system. He stated, “As far as we are concerned in the House of Representatives, nobody can stop us from supporting President Bola Tinubu’s bid to reboot the economy to work for the country.”
Despite the governors’ calls for withdrawal of support, the President has indicated that amendments can be made during the legislative process. Agbese highlighted the House’s commitment to supporting initiatives that benefit the economy and expressed confidence that the bills would be passed with minor modifications by the 10th Assembly.
Lawmakers such as Mr. Afam Ogene and Odianosen Okojie have also voiced their backing for the bills, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in the legislative process. They urged their colleagues to support the reforms for the overall benefit of the country.
The House of Representatives has provided copies of the bills to its members for review ahead of upcoming plenary sessions, signaling their proactive approach to considering the proposed tax reforms.
