The Namibian government is seeking Nigeria’s support in strengthening its anti-corruption efforts by partnering with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). This initiative aims to facilitate training and the exchange of expertise with Namibia’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
This development was announced during a courtesy visit by Namibia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Humphrey Geiseb, to the ICPC headquarters. Ambassador Geiseb emphasized Nigeria’s leading role in Africa’s fight against corruption and expressed a desire to learn from Nigeria’s successful strategies, particularly in asset recovery efforts led by the ICPC and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
“The fight against corruption is evolving across the continent, and we believe Nigeria should spearhead sharing its expertise. We hope Nigeria will allow countries like Namibia to benefit from its experiences. It’s crucial for us to learn within Africa rather than seeking knowledge from outside the continent,” Ambassador Geiseb stated.
In response, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, expressed appreciation for the ambassador’s visit during the launch of ICPC’s Strategic Action Plan 2024-2028. He highlighted the necessity of collaborative efforts in combating corruption across Africa and reaffirmed ICPC’s commitment to partnering with other anti-corruption agencies.
Dr. Aliyu emphasized that the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), the training division of the ICPC, is well-equipped to fulfill Namibia’s training requests. “Corruption networks operate globally, so we must unite to disrupt these illegal activities. This collaboration will enhance good governance and attract foreign direct investment across the continent,” he noted.
He also referenced an existing Memorandum of Understanding signed by his predecessor, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, confirming ICPC’s readiness to assist the Namibian Anti-Corruption Commission. The Chairman expressed optimism about mutual learning opportunities, stating, “We have our own Anti-Corruption Academy for training, and we look forward to learning from your team as well.”
