In a decisive move to address escalating tensions in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara and local political leaders to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law. This directive follows alarming reports of violence, including arson and explosions, in the wake of last Saturday’s local government council elections.
In an official press release from the State House, President Tinubu expressed his profound concern over the unrest and urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation. He emphasized the importance of discouraging supporters from engaging in any form of violence or destructive behavior.
To ensure public safety, the President has instructed law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to restore and maintain peace in the region. He specifically directed the police to provide security for local government offices and protect elected chairmen from potential threats.
“Government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism,” President Tinubu stated, underscoring the importance of maintaining order in a democratic society. He reiterated that self-help has no place in a democracy, especially after 25 years of continuous democratic governance.
Furthermore, President Tinubu highlighted that the judiciary is equipped to resolve political disputes, and the outcomes of the recent elections should be addressed through legal channels rather than through violence.
