Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, has called for a period of serious introspection as Nigeria celebrates its 64th independence anniversary. Addressing President Bola Tinubu and other leaders, Mark emphasized the need for sober reflection on the country’s journey to nationhood.
In a heartfelt goodwill message to Nigerians, Senator Mark assessed the nation’s progress and noted that despite the significant challenges of insecurity, poverty, disease, and underdevelopment, Nigeria possesses the human and natural resources necessary to foster positive change. He stressed that this change is achievable if citizens remain patriotic and united with a shared mission and purpose.
Reflecting on the nation’s history, Mark highlighted the devastating 30-month civil war, sporadic ethnoreligious conflicts, and the uncertainties of political engagements. He attributed these issues to leadership inadequacies and the failure of citizens to uphold national unity.
In a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Paul Mumeh, Senator Mark remarked, “Disappointing as the situation may seem, the shortcomings of the past should serve as useful lessons for progress. We must learn from our past mistakes and work towards a better future.”
He cautioned against divisive tendencies and inflammatory rhetoric that could further fragment the nation. “Those who exploit our fault lines of ethnicity and religious differences to promote hatred are enemies of the country,” he asserted.
Despite these challenges, Mark acknowledged progress in certain areas, noting, “Though we are not yet where we should be, we are certainly better than yesteryears. This should serve as motivation for us to continue working towards a better Nigeria.”
Emphasizing the role of political leaders, Mark urged them to lead by example and prioritize the needs and well-being of the populace. “Leaders must prioritize the needs and well-being of the people,” he stated.
Senator Mark expressed optimism that Nigeria could overcome its current challenges if all citizens resolved to move beyond past grievances. “We must unite and work together to address our challenges,” he urged.
To tackle underdevelopment, Mark advocated for substantial investments in enterprises and production to boost income and curb capital flight. He stressed the importance of creating an environment where everyone can work without fear of intimidation or harassment, adding, “We need to be our brother’s keeper at all times. I wish Nigerians a prosperous nation.”
