Senior lawyer Ebun Adegboruwa has raised concerns that telecommunication companies are colluding with Nigerian authorities to restrict internet access as citizens prepare for nationwide protests against economic hardships.
Adegboruwa alleged that some telecom companies have been disconnecting subscribers for flimsy reasons, including lack of NIN registration or linking, in a bid to limit internet access and thwart the planned August protests.
He urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to intervene and protect subscribers’ rights.
This development echoes complaints from Nigerians who have been denied internet access by their network providers.
Activist Omoyele Sowore warned that protests could start at telecoms companies’ offices if they continue to limit internet access ahead of the protests.
The move is reminiscent of the network outage during the EndSARS protests, where live rounds were opened on protesters at Lekki Toll gate.
