Tension as Power Struggle Erupts in House of Representatives as 150 Lawmakers Challenge Leadership

by

A significant rift has emerged in the House of Representatives, as over 150 first-term lawmakers have formed a pressure group, dubbed the “Novelty Group,” to challenge the current leadership. The group, comprising members from eight political parties across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, accuses the leadership of marginalization, exclusion, and subservience to the Presidency.

The Novelty Group’s grievances include:

– Swift passage of executive bills without thorough scrutiny
– Exclusion from key legislative activities
– Limited oversight functions and benefits for deputies and other members
– Perceived lack of independence by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and other leaders

The group seeks to address these issues through:

– Restructuring House committees for fairer representation
– Advocating for greater inclusion and participation
– potentially impeaching current leaders

House spokesman Akin Rotimi Jr. acknowledged the formation of various groups to advance common interests but claimed no knowledge of the Novelty Group. He reiterated the leadership’s commitment to inclusive governance, ensuring all representatives have a voice.

This power struggle has the potential to reshape the House’s internal dynamics and impact the legislative process. As tensions rise, all eyes are on the Novelty Group’s next move and the leadership’s response.”
