In a move aimed at strengthening the nation’s tertiary education sector, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointments of 555 individuals to serve as Chairmen and members of governing councils of tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

The appointees, drawn from diverse backgrounds and expertise, will play a crucial role in shaping the strategic direction of Nigeria’s universities and other tertiary institutions.

Inauguration and Retreat for the newly appointed Chairmen and Members of the Governing Councils of Tertiary Institutions is scheduled to take place on Thursday, May 30th, and Friday, May 31st, 2024.

This development comes as a welcome relief to the academic community, as the threat of a nationwide strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been successfully resolved. The union had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with the non-appointment of governing councils for federal universities, among other grievances.

With this development, Nigeria’s tertiary education sector is poised for renewed growth and development, as the new governing councils prepare to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead.
