Nigeria’s secret police, Department of State Services (DSS), has arrested a Kano-based politician, Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda, over his alleged threat to make the state ungovernable.
Kwamanda – a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – had threatened to mobilise the masses to start an uprising, Daily Trust reports.
A DSS source told the newspaper that the controversial politician was arrested after a radio interview in which he made the threat went viral.
According to the source, Kwamanda was handed over to the police and was subsequently charged before a Magistrate Court in Kano.
The court thereafter ordered that he should be remanded in a correctional facility.
In his controversial interview, Kwamanda accused the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of having concluded plans to return Muhammadu Sanusi, the deposed 14th Emir of Kano, to the throne.
The Kano State Government under the leadership of then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, dethroned Sanusi over alleged disrespect to the office of the governor and other government agencies.
In the video, Kwamanda reportedly said he would mobilise the masses to take over the streets of Kano and start an uprising so large and destructive that the Nigerian government would be forced to declare a state of emergency in the state.
Since the Supreme Court judgment which affirmed the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as Kano State governor, Kwamanda has reportedly granted several interviews on local radio stations expressing his dissatisfaction with the judgment.
He has also reportedly faulted President Bola Tinubu for allegedly not ensuring victory for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
